SPECIAL NEEDS DOGS

Some of our dogs have "special needs," either medical or psychological (due to emotional trauma). These dogs may require surgery, rehabilitation, or psychological therapy. If you'd like to read about why Homeward Bound rescues so many special needs dogs, please go to our FAQ page. The type of special need dogs we take in most are those who are heartworm positive. You'll note that the heartworm positive dogs are often not listed on this page and are instead posted on the Dogs for Adoption page. This is because their special needs are temporary. Most places choose to either euthanize heartworm positive dogs or refuse to accept them into their programs due to how expensive treatment is. True, treatment is extremely expensive (at least $350 per dog!) but we do not feel dogs should die for something that is so easy to treat. Taking in so many special needs dogs does mean our adoption fees are higher than other rescues/shelters but please keep in mind that these dogs are the "true rescues of rescue," not just the perfectly healthy dogs. Providing these services is costly & any monetary donation will be greatly appreciated. The following dogs listed below are a few of our "special needs" dogs. If you would like to help these dogs, please send your tax-deductible donation today! Donate via our printable online form or in person.

Important Information Regarding Adopting a Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier from Homeward Bound: If you meet all of our Adoption Requirements/Policies and are interested in adopting a Pit Bull from Homeward Bound, please know that we have the right to do a home visit first before any Pit Bull is adopted. We also require reference checks (a veterinary reference is preferred).

Pit Bulls are athletic, exuberant dogs so do not adopt one if you want a couch-potato dog - these sweeties need at least one walk a day and at least 30 minutes of playtime.

Please know that Pit Bulls do best as the only animal in the house. We do not recommend that they go to a multi-dog household because they were bred to fight with other dogs. Most Pit Bulls in our program do not have dog aggression but anyone who knows anything about Pit Bulls knows the golden rule - you can never trust a Pit Bull not to fight. Usually dog aggression starts showing up when the dog is 1-3 years old. Please know that DOG AGGRESSION DOES NOT EQUATE WITH HUMAN AGGRESSION - these are two totally different things.

FEATURED DOG
Name: Keishy
Description: Keishy is a petite senior lady with more spunk and zip in her than should be allowed.... this is one of those girls who is so charming she does not realize she is a senior lady! Keishy is 10 years young and still has some years left in her to share the joy and love that bursts like sunbeams out of her. She is housetrained, very friendly, used to other dogs and has lived with cats. She also likes kids, but due to her small size we are recommending an adult home for her, or older kids. Keishy was sadly given up when her owner went into assisted living. She would love to find a forever home where she can share the bed with you, go for walks and sit on your lap while you drive, and make sure your lap is warm. Keishy has some missing teeth but eats just fine, and also has weak kneecaps... again, she doesn't allow this to slow her down at all either! Sound like a little piece of heaven? She is! You can email taffycandy890@netzero.net for more details or H.B. pre-adoption questionnaire information.
